The luxurious British grocer has faced an increase in competition from discount chains like Lidl and Aldi that have been growing their market share. Waitrose is still ranked top in a recent Market Force Information survey on the perceptions of customers about seven supermarket chains. The survey included 4300 consumers who rated supermarkets based on their assortment, layout and cleanliness.

Waitrose has taken several measures to protect both customers and staff during the coronavirus outbreak. Customers are required to bring only one person to the store and wear a scarf or mask. Hand sanitiser stations are also located at the front of every shop. Waitrose offers a Volunteer's Card for customers who self-isolate, allowing family and friends to pick up orders on behalf of the customer.
