How to Replace an audi advanced key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and audikey (by doodleordie.com) G40).
Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare audi key in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and audi key (historydb.date) speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially when you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues with your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi a1 car key, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's engine is spinning. If this sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This part is common across the Audi A1 keys 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.
