Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it can boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.
Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a specific amount.
Item Level
When an item gets upgraded, its stats are increased in value. The value is the sum of the perks that are leveled up (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be costly, dependent on who you employ and what you decide to do. This is due to the number of perks that need to be modified to upgrade an item.
It can also be used as a gating requirement while waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It can also be used as a gating requirement while waiting for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to a lower level). Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.
When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment players can look at the level of an item. It's a good indicator of an item's quality and the amount of damage it's able to deal. The level of an item can be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a vendor.
The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are several theories about how the calculation of an item's level is carried out. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula that determines how much an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values, and also that gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. This can lead to an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's real item level.
This is not the only factor that affects the ilvl of an item. The location of where the item was dropped may change its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit score. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses them in a variety of ways to encourage players not to restrict themselves to a particular weapon and to motivate them to try out other weapons. The stat mods of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's skill.
The upgrades to an item can boost its stats. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. An item that is white or grey, for example, will only be upgraded once however, items with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times with higher prices.
Affixes are a different method to change an item's stats. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to give items additional damage or special capabilities (such as revitalizing dead or reducing cooling downs), or to make them unique by adding a name.
Presently, all affixes are able to be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with circling arrows. It will cost a set amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other methods of rerolling.
In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can select which of the available stats they want to keep on an item upgrades when it is upgraded. The range of stats is determined by the item's level. However, all items will contain at least one stat within the range, unless they are a unique item, or an item that has a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without having to reroll the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. Like base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface would not display all the possible stats simultaneously.
Item Luck
A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the chances of finding items, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. It doesn't, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It provides players with an opportunity to get better gear earlier in the game. This is especially advantageous for early game runs, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each item level and can be further increased through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) for a further +40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Certain items, such as the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be outfitted to increase the damage of any ability that is able to deal damage by 5%. These items can be found in the shops or made with the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item, the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to how much success rates can be increased and the chance of a failed upgrade cannot be greater than 100%..
The luck of an item may influence the success of an upgrade. Each item has an overall success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases this chance by five percent.
The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
