How to Replace an audi key fob replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The fourth one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They're cheap and easy to find, especially if they're a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an excellent choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of the audi replacement key's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
